Robert Morris Men's & Women's Track & Field Update
The Robert Morris University men's and women's indoor track and field teams opened its 2002-03 season December 7 at the West Virginia Holiday Classic.
On the men's side, the Colonials received a solid performance from freshman Greg Carter (Frederick, Md. / Frederick) in his first intercollegiate meet, as he finished fourth in the 60-meter dash with an IC4A qualifying time of 6.95. He finished behind Arther West (Unattached), William White (West Virginia) and Blake Pearson (West Virginia). West finished with a time of 6.85.
Carter also came through in the field events by winning the long jump with a leap of 21.10.25. Sophomore John Henne (Tamaqua, Pa. / Tamaqua) and freshman Chris Heinrich (Erie, Pa. / Harborcreek) had solid showings in the long jump, as well. Henne placed sixth in the event with a jump of 20.8.25, while Heinrich was seventh with a leap of 20.5.25. Carter also finished second in the triple jump behind Frostburg State's Travis Bouldin with a leap of 45.6.25.
Other solid showings on the men's side included RMU's shot put trio of sophomore Garreth Fearon (Hyattsville, Md. / High Point) and freshmen Lucas Van Tassel (Corry, Pa. / Corry Area) and Michael Francic (Zelienople, Pa. / Seneca Valley) . Fearon finished third in the shot put with a toss of 43.7.75, while Van Tassel and Francic tied for fourth with a throw of 42.7.5. The Colonials also got a solid start to the season from freshman Dijon Jefferson (Erie, Pa. / Central) , who finished second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.04 and second in the 500-meter run with a time of 1:06.34.
RMU's 1,600-meter relay team that consisted of Jefferson, freshman Marques Pinkas (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) , junior Justin Wotus (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Baldwin) and senior Paul Scheuneman (McKees Rocks, Pa. / Montour) got the season off on the right foot by finishing third in the event with a time of 3:29.43.
Leading the charge on the women's side was sophomore Nicole Downing (New Castle, Pa. / Laurel) , who won the shot put with a throw of 38.5. Freshman Katie Fisher (Reading, Pa. / Muhlenberg) , meanwhile, finished fifth in the event with a toss of 36.0.25. Downing also finished third in the weight throw with a toss of 45.25, while Fisher was right behind her in fourth place with a throw of 38.4.25.
Krystal George (Avon, N.Y. / Avon Central) got her senior year off to a solid start by placing third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.04. She finished behind Jessica Cziakowski of West Virginia and Andre Perry of Marshall. Cziakowski finished with a time of 8.91 and Perry with a time of 9.01. George also finished sixth in the 200-meter with a time of 26.82.
The 1,600-meter relay team that consisted of George, sophomore Nicole Weight (Monongahela, Pa. / Ringgold) , freshmen Suzanne Montecalvo (Washington, Pa. / Washington) and Jessica Miller (Conway, Pa. / Freedom) finished with a fourth-place finish thanks to a time of 4:19.71. Leading the way was George, the team's anchor, who finished with a 61.4 split time.
